Main Road, Lamma Island
Lamma is a vibrant, pedestrian community, home to many ethnic Chinese and a large number of artistic and offbeat expatriates.
Cars were outlawed in the 1970s. Most residents of the main town, Yung Shue Wan, where I stayed during my visit, know each other by sight or by name. The economy is based on local trade in goods, fishing and tourism. There are no factories here, though there is a coal-fired power plant.
